Cohabitation

A two-unit modular house on a narrow parcel

This small and narrow parcel was to hold two dwellings, one studio and one two-bedroom apartment, lifted off of the ground in order to preserve a passageway below. From these constraints came a system that combines all non-spatial parts of the homes – stairs, kitchens, storage, built-in furniture – into single modular units that would maximize living space all while maintaining the many functional needs of a household.

Corner staircases, as well as being vertical circulation, have become kitchens and storage components. The bedrooms are made up of modules that unify walls, storage, beds, and windows. The limited amount of outside-facing walls prompted a need for natural light. The bathrooms, located at the core, are illuminated by a light well that spans from top to bottom.
